Introduction
Ever since the game started, there have been many prototype weapons and robots that were tested by Pixonic, some of which never even made onto the Test Server. This page contains information on the known cancelled robots, weapons and other game features. The little information on this page cannot be found on Pixonic's website.
If you are interested in the topic yet you cannot find the information then go to YouTube (if on a tablet use the one on your default browser as it is easier to find) then search for the older videos.
Robots
Robo Duck
Robo Duck was an ultra-heavy bot with an extremely high health along with an extremely slow speed and absolutely no protection. This bot could also sit on beacons. Its ability was a monstrous “QUACK”. It was never released, due to that one overpowered ability and its incredibly high health that would have surely broken the game.
This poster was intended as a practical joke by Pixonic.
Bastion
The Bastion was a heavy robot that possessed two heavy weapons. It was replaced by the Raijin before release.
The Bastion's name lives on in Raijin's 'Bastion Mode', indicating that the design of the Raijin originated with the Prototype 'Bastion' Robot. Bastion's ability was called 'Hold Position' before it was cancelled by Pixonic. It was one of the first robots to come the closest to being released, with Pixonic even releasing a video about it on its upcoming release. Unfortunately, it was replaced by the Raijin before it ever came out.
However, given the advanced stage the Bastion got into development compared to other robots, Pixonic has made numerous nods to the robot over the years. A particular Halloween update soon after its cancellation featured spectral Bastion robots on all battlefields as decorations, which was a pleasant surprise for many players. Years later, it was partially re-implemented with the addition of the Solid Jaeger, confirmed by Pixonic to be a direct reference to the Bastion. However, years after that, it was finally re-implemented as the final opponent in the rebooted Hunting Grounds mode. Unfortunately, it has never been made into a fully unique playable robot.
Robespierre
The Robespierre would have been a robot with one light, two medium, and one heavy hardpoint. Many believed that it would have been a heavy version of the Golem because of the visual similarities.
If it was to possess similar if not more health than the Golem, then it was probably never released due to it having too much firepower compared to other robots at the time, especially if you consider that it would presumably have also had more health than the Golem.
Sentry (other name: Sentinel)
Unfortunately, there is little known information on what the Sentry looked like, just that it had 3 medium weapons and four legs. It appeared in the Roboduck poster along with Bastion, and presumably was planned at around the same time. However, no videos were ever released on it, and it was cancelled soon after.
The only source of information on its appearance is the Roboduck poster (see above) which gave its rough outline. The Sentry was probably replaced by the Fujin, possessing similar looks and firepower. Like the Bastion and Raijin , the Sentry 'lives on' through the Fujin's ability, called 'Sentry Mode'.
The Sentry may have been the hidden robot in Springfield, as it bears huge resemblance to the Fujin (like the hidden robot), however it did not have any known relations to the Japaneese faction, along with the hidden robot (the wording at the front of the robot is replaced with a serial number).
Unknown Japanese Faction Robot
This robot may have been cancelled due to its 'rising sun' paint job and possible link to Imperial Japan. This paint job could have understandably caused concerns in the player-base of Japan and countries which had previously been conquered by it.
Little else about the robot besides its concept art is known. Given that the robot appears to be bipedal, it is unknown if it would've appeared in the same faction (at the time known as the JSDF before the release of the new factions) as Fujin and Raijin, both of which were quadrupedal.
Eska
The Eska is one of the most recent cancelled robots. It appeared on the test server equipped with three light weapon slots and used the hull of the Schutze.
Its ability granted it stealth with no time limit, at the expense of being able to fire its weapons. As a light robot, it was relatively speedy as well. Eska's basic concept was integrated into the Loki, along with its hardpoint choices.
Annet
The Annet is one of the most recent cancelled robots. It never appeared on the test server, but an image of the robot has been leaked. Its hardpoints are unknown, but it uses the hull of the Griffin with some minor adjustments, resembling a retextured Scavenger Griffin. From this information, it can be presumed that the robot has either 4 or 2 hardpoints.
The robot boasts an impressively durable hull at 155,000 durability at Level 7, but its real ability is its speed - at 70km/h at level 7 it would have been the fastest robot in the game by a wide margin at the time it would've been released. It boasts the Quick Draw ability, which allows it to switch from one set of weapons to another, but due to the lack of information about its hardpoints its exact usage is unknown. It may have been a placeholder ability for the robot as well.
As the robot was Level 7 in the picture, it can be presumed that it was not taken in the Test Server. The exact origin of the photo is unknown, but it can be guessed that it was leaked by the devs of the game.
Weapons
Possible Trident prototype
In the old WWR (Walking War Robots) website there was a “propose you own weapon competition” and the “revolver missile” won. It is unknown what happened to the model, but after some development the Trident came in.
It is possible that the model was scrapped or that the two events were mere coincidences.
Wave
A possible Ember or Redeemer prototype, with a range of 350 meters. No model of the weapon was ever released, with a Zeus model being used on the test server.
Pulse
The Pulse had different setups medium, light, and heavy (using a transparent Orkan model). Players could vote on which hardpoint should be released on the live server. It was extremely overpowered, creating a huge explosive dome when fired, which is probably why it was never released.
This weapon's animation was later used for Hellburner's Overload ability, as well as Mercury's Helldive ability.
Prototypes L1, L2 and L3
The weapons L1, L2 and L3 were light weapons that used the model of the Trebuchet when they appeared on the Test Server. The official reason for the cancellation of these weapons is unknown. One arguable reason for its cancelling is that it had too much firepower and it could possibly be related to the Trebuchet. If so, the L3 prototype could have been an early version of the Arbalest. Not much else is known aside from various theories.
Bubble gun prototype
Appearing in version 2.6.1., this weapon had no model for itself, so it used a transparent Magnum model. When fired, it shot an orb-like projectile that followed the target wherever it went. The orbs moved slowly but also dealt high damage on impact (possibly the reason for it being cancelled).
Heavy Homing Missile (possible Chimera or Thermite) Prototype
This weapon was first tested in the 2.5.0 test version. Like the bubble gun, it had no model, so it used a transparent spiral. 3 versions were made, with 1 firing like the spiral and 2 firing like the hydra. It was probably scrapped due the fact that it was supposed to be a mid-range missile and dealt too much damage.
It could be possible related to the Thermite , despite the longer range. This could have also been the same weapon that appeared on the test server about a year later as the Chimera.
Possible Tempest Prototype
This appeared on the version 1.9.1 test server.
The design seems to be very closely based on more real-world firearms. It is very similar to the Tempest only with a much shorter reload time.
Possible Molot T prototype
YouTube video featuring the weapon: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO1gAkpbA-A&t=0m30s
You can see a Rogatka and a Griffin using it.
Kang Dae Prototype
Was originally intended for the final game but was scrapped, and was replaced by a model with a sleeker design.
Modules
Dash Unit
The Dash Unit was a planned Active Module for normal robots which was unique to other Modules in the fact that it had two charges-each of which could be used independently of each other with a separate reload time, similar to the Kumiho, Haechi, Bulgasari and Strider's operating principles.
Each charge of the Dash Unit took 12 seconds to reload, but as with all Modules on the Test Server, nobody knew its activation cost as Modules on the Test Server always just take a single Power Cell/Gold to use.
Each boost/charge of the Dash Unit takes the robot it is mounted on about 60m forwards in the direction its torso is pointed in.
However, while this Active Module was close for release, further feedback from the test server recipients has deemed the module to be "impractical" during gameplay, leading to the cancellation of the module. However, the Dash Unit has been far from completely scrapped from the game - it has made appearances in past Skirmishes and may well make more.
Accelerator
The Accelerator, hence the name, was a planned Passive Module for normal robots. It was extremely similar to the Titan Accelerator as it boosted the speed of the robot it was mounted on. However, it was scrapped, probably due to the ridiculously game-breaking speeds fast robots could reach with the module, especially with Pilot skills like Road Hog and Spy equipped.
It was partially reimplemented in the form of the Nitro Unit, which functions somewhat the same except that when the robot takes enough damage, the Modules will terminate their speed boost. Its test server icon lives on in the form of the Titan Accelerator.
Executioner
The Executioner was a passive module that was available to regular robots. It allowed the user to instantly destroy any target once their durability was below a certain threshold. This threshold was 20% for robots and 35% for titans.
Player feedback on both test server and in social media, have reached a general consensus of the module being "too overpowered", "unfair to those who experience close calls", among other reasons, leading to the Executioner being "postponed for release".
However, the Executioner has not been completely scrapped. Pixonic has hinted on its use in future Skirmishes. In addition, its mechanics have been partially reimplemented in the form of the Lynx's built-in weapon, which insta-kills enemies below a certain durability threshold.
Diffusor
The Diffusor was a Universal Module that was available to Titans, it functioned similarly to Anticontrol. However, it reduced the effect duration of Lockdown and Suppression by 33%. These attributes could be stacked (up to 100%), if a particular titan was able to utilize multiple Diffusors. This module was tested in tandem with the Self-fix Unit, during the various test server sessions.
It was most likely scrapped due to another module (Titan Anticontrol), which served a similar purpose but neutralized both effects in question altogether and provided temporary immunity to such effects, completely overshadowing the Diffusor's usefulness in combat.
Charger
The Charger (technically named Optimized Charger) was an assault module that was available to titans, it essentially filled the titan bar by 25% each when starting a match. It could also be stacked, in which players can start out a match with up to 75% of the titan bar already filled. This was eventually scrapped due to the fact that players can start dropping in titans after they lose their first robot within the first minute and potentially rush the other team if they weren't able to bring out their titans first.
In the Test Server, it was a rectangular shaped module that was dark grey with dark green accents.
Game Modes and Other Features
Middle Beacon Energy Shield
This feature placed an indestructible shield in every center beacon, although it would have probably been unbalanced as players on the same team could just shelter behind it and prevent anyone from capturing it due to the protection given by the energy shield.
Although teams could still win without capturing centre beacon, this game feature would have decreased the chances of the centre beacon switching and would have given a considerable advantage to the team that captured the centre beacon first.
King of the Hill
King of the Hill was a gamemode that was available on both the live and test versions of War Robots. It was first introduced in a test server session in 2018, however it was formally introduced a year later on the live server. Unfortunately, it was removed from the live server and scrapped later on due to much of the player base dislike and not yielding favorable results that Pixonic was looking for on the live server.
Players on either team had to capture and hold down beacons that were only active for a period of time, the position of the active beacon would alternate between beacons around the map. The next beacon that would become active would be highlighted. The team with most points wins.
Due to the layout of the beacons on most maps, the playstyle and gameplay became similar to teamdeath match. Either team would just camp or wait until the beacon closest to their side becomes active. Unless it was a combined team effort or the opposing team was very spread out, there was little opportunity to rush to the active beacon on the opposing side.
Trivia and Other Information
- Maximilien de Robespierre was a French lawyer and politician who was executed during the French Revolution by the Guillotine
- Designations for guns used by the British Army all begin with the letter 'L', which might have been referenced with the cancelled L1, L2 and L3 prototypes.
- The Eska was commonly referred to as the 'Schutze 2.0' by members of this wiki. This was due to the fact that it was essentially an upgraded Schutze in all but name, boasting superior firepower and an ability.
- Pixonic often scraps designs which leave many robots and weapons which were never released. This leaves us to believe that there are several other cancelled prototypes that are unheard of so far.
- Pixonic sometimes releases robots inspired by other cancelled prototypes, such as the release of the Raijin after the scrapping of the Bastion.
