Introduction[]

The Bulwark is a medium robot with 2 heavy hardpoints, introduced in update 3.9. It is unofficially classified as a heavy robot based on wiki criteria.

Abilities[]

The Bulwark's ability is called Protection, which activates a special energy shield called an "Aegis-Class Barrier".

The Aegis is a defense system that functions similarly to an Ancile shield, the difference being it defends the robot against all damage types (kinetic, splash, and energy) except for the Hellburner's Overload, the Mercury's Helldive, the Kid's Stove , and the Arthur's Blast Wave. It protects the robot from the Blaze, Igniter and Ember's flames, however the shield cannot regenerate while it is in use.

When the Aegis shield is deactivated it regenerates at 4.5% shield capacity per second. While the Aegis shield is deactivated, the Bulwark deploys a frontal physical shield similar to that of a Lancelot but significantly smaller, so some weapon shots will damage the robot (e.g. the Thunder due to bullet spread). One of the Bulwark's unique features is having a shield active at all times (either the Aegis-class barrier or its physical shield).

Strategy[]

The Bulwark is a versatile Tier 3 tank robot that can serve multiple different roles - it can be either a frontline brawler, a team support robot or an area defender.

The Bulwark's preferred combat range is brawling. At Tier 3, two heavy weapons is not that much of an impressive loadout. However, the sheer DPS of close-range brawling weapons mitigates this issue. Despite the Bulwark's low speed, tactical toggling of the bot's two shields should allow it to get within range without much issue. However, the chance of enemies fleeing is a real problem - applying lock-down to enemies can greatly assist the Bulwark in keeping them in place while it launches an assault with its weapons.

For an even more effective playstyle, the Bulwark can tag along with allies. The Bulwark's durable Aegis shield can protect its allies from harm, while its allies supplement extra firepower on top of the Bulwark's mediocre hardpoint loadout and can also act as meatshields when the Aegis shield is depleted. When allies are nearby, the Bulwark can effectively establish a 'perimeter' around a tactical point (usually a beacon) with its Aegis shield, as its allies should ideally prevent enemies from coming too close to the Aegis, as if not a strategic move then a measure of self-preservation.

The robot's Aegis barrier should be used whenever possible in place of the physical shield as it can regenerate, whereas the physical shield cannot. However even if the Aegis shield is at maximum health, when hiding behind cover it is advisable to change to the physical shield. This is because due to the Aegis' dome nature, enemies can possibly deplete it even if they don't have the Bulwark itself in their line of fire. This is even more advisable if the Aegis has been damaged, as it can regenerate when the physical shield is active as well.

If the Bulwark is under fire from explosive weaponry, the bot should toggle to its Aegis shield even if it has no health. This is because the physical shield cannot block the splash projectiles and having it active would do nothing but unnecessarily deplete the physical shield's health.

Another thing to watch out for is small, fast enemy robots. If given the opportunity to advance towards close-quarters, they can run circles around the Bulwark and deal damage to it while making it exceptionally hard for the Bulwark to lock on and return fire. As such, as a measure of self-preservation, the Bulwark should ideally prioritize advancing small enemies, even if it happens to be in a squad.

Counterplay: The Bulwark is just a general, all-round tank - it has two shields, each with high health, and considerable base HP as well. However, eliminating both shields from the equation makes the Bulwark significantly easier to attack, which can be done via the use of kinetic shotguns. The Aegis shield will catch most, if not all shots from these weapons from range, severely depleting it, whilst the physical shield takes double damage from the pellets, shredding it. Alternatively, the use of explosives in conjunction with shieldbreaker can also be used to tag-team the Bulwark's shields. Finally, as stated above, fast, manoevrable enemies can run circles around the Bulwark, making it hard for the Bulwark to target and actually deal damage to them.

Threat Measure: The Bulwark specialises in multiple roles. Due to its high health and shielding, it can pose a moderate-high threat as a Tier 3 robot in these roles, but any attempt to deviate from them, or if they are not executed correctly, may make the Bulwark fall down to a low threat as a Tier 3 bot.
